Although the temperature dipped to frigid levels in recent days, it likely wasn’t enough to keep commuters to and from West Lethbridge from getting hot under the collar. With westbound access to Whoop-Up Drive from 6 Avenue blocked for several days this week while city crews repaired a broken watermain, the rush-hour journey to and from the westside — never a pleasant experience at the best of times — became a nightmare. The 6 Avenue closure forced motorists to take the Scenic Drive exit onto Whoop-Up, which created lengthy traffic jams during the busiest times of the day. A seven-vehicle pileup Thursday morning on a slippery Whoop-Up Drive compounded the problem, and the resulting traffic snarl hindered westside residents attempting to seek an alternative route to work via Crowsnest Trail. That long dreamed-about third bridge would sure have come in handy, wouldn’t it?

As if airport security measures weren’t enough of a pain for air travellers, an additional form of scrutiny will soon be coming to major Canadian airports. The full-body scanners, to be implemented at airports by spring, will use low-level radio frequency waves to create a three-dimensional image showing in detail the contours of a person’s body beneath their clothing. The new level of security is a response to the alleged Christmas Day bombing attempt aboard a jetliner over Michigan by a man with explosives sewn into his underpants.

Premier Ed Stelmach just can’t catch a break. As if it isn’t bad enough he’s been taking flak from voters, enduring questions about his leadership and watching his party’s popularity sag in the opinion polls, now he’s had his winter vacation spoiled. Some vacationers worry they forgot to turn off the tap. Stelmach has a similar worry: His party is leaking. By the time he returns from his vacation, followed by a scheduled trip to the Middle East Jan. 14, there could be serious damage to his political house. That’s enough to take the shine off any leader’s holiday. On the other hand, the premier was probably glad to be unavailable for comment after two of his Conservative MLAs broke ranks and bolted to the Wildrose Alliance on Monday.

Christmas break is over for the kids, who are back in school this week. For parliamentarians, however, the break has barely begun. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s decision to prorogue Parliament for the second year in a row means instead of returning to work Jan. 25, MPs won’t be back in the House of Commons until March 3. Wouldn’t the kids love to have a Christmas break like that. The federal Conservatives like the idea, too, so much so that they’re pondering shutting down the Parliamentary shop for an extended period at the end of every year.

Welcome to a new year. Many will be glad to have 2009 in the rear-view mirror, peppered as it was with economic troubles, pandemic fears, political turmoil, etc. Turning the page on a new year seems like a welcome change right about now.
