Although police have come a long way in recognizing and responding to disturbances involving people who are mentally ill, a new study may shed light on how police training for such situations can be further improved.
The research project, funded by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, will study interactions with police from the perspective of those with mental illness who’ve had run-ins with the law.
“It’s long overdue that we got their opinion,” said Terry Coleman, a retired Saskatchewan police chief who serves on the commission’s Mental Health and Law Advisory Committee.

Fort Macleod debates RV bylaw Print E-mail

Town officials in Fort Macleod are bracing themselves for what could be a contentious move to tighten the rules for parking RVs along local roads.
Earlier this month, town council introduced proposed revisions to the town’s traffic bylaw which include a new year-round, 72-hour limit on the length of time unattached holiday, construction and utility trailers can be parked along local streets. Under the existing bylaw, unattached trailers can be parked along the street without a time limit between April 1 and Oct. 1 each year.

The 80th annual Kiwanis Music and Speech Arts Festival gets under way in Lethbridge today, with well over 5,000 youth entered in dozens of categories running through March 27.
Carole Roberts, executive director of the event, said entrants range in age from as young as four years to men and women in their twenties.
“We’re running 92 sessions this year — last year we ran 91,” said Roberts. “We’ve got really little ones and we’ve got a lot from the university, because the music department is so strong there. Adjudicators are usually mainly from Alberta, and we feel that we have a wonderful pool of talent in all areas.”
