Determination to succeed and to serve is keeping Matthew Skretting working and continuing his University of Lethbridge career despite his affliction with Duchene’s Muscular Dystrophy, a debilitating, muscle-wasting condition that has slowly taken away his ability to walk and do many of the things that most able-bodied people take for granted.
Working this summer for Calgary-based Nexen, an oil company, in its Geophysical Information System computer science division, Matt has attracted younger brother Brock for company as his circle of friends and community rise to the challenge to “elect” Matt their UFA Co-operative Ltd. Small Town Hero.

Insurance Bureau of Canada reports that a storm that pummeled Calgary and parts of southern Alberta with golf ball-sized hail in July has resulted in record-high claims of nearly $400 million.
The July 12 weather event produced a sudden downpour and fierce hail large enough to dent cars. Local insurers were immediately inundated with calls from home, car and business owners seeking assistance.
Doug Dueck of Lethbridge, regional insurance manager for Alberta Financial Services Corp., said about 300 agricultural claims were submitted from that storm from Strathmore to Airdrie. Those losses were in addition to the bureau figures for Calgary.

Taber corn growers have committed to supplying fresh Taber corn for the annual Taber Corn Fest Aug. 26-29, and organizers are telling southern Albertans to come for the corn and stay for the fun.
Tom Machacek, a fest committee member, said growers were contacted last week, and indicated they will have enough corn to meet the festival crowd needs.
He said the weather has been co-operating to speed development after the slow progress of the crops since planting, growth hindered by the frequent heavy rains and cooler-than-usual spring and early-summer weather.

Long-term care beds an issue Print E-mail

About 20 people showed up at a Friends of Medicare rally outside City Hall Tuesday afternoon to protest the loss of more publicly funded long-term care beds in Alberta.
The rally was held to show solidarity with Red Deer where the Red Deer Nursing Home and Valley Park Manor are scheduled to close when a private care facility opens its doors. A similar rally hosted by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees was also held at Red Deer’s City Hall.
The situation is reminiscent of when the provincial government closed cytology labs in Red Deer and Lethbridge in favour of private labs in Calgary and Edmonton, said Bev Mündel-Atherstone, vice-president of the Lethbridge Friends of Medicare. The province is privatizing and centralizing health care.
“We’re seeing the same thing with long term care,” she said.

Michael Cormican will be the Liberal candidate for the Lethbridge constituency in the next federal election.
He was acclaimed at a nomination meeting Saturday and he hopes to put an end to a 90-year tradition of electing a Conservative to represent Lethbridge in Ottawa.
While he doesn’t have a defined platform since an election has yet to be called, Cormican has some definite ideas about what he’d like to see accomplished.
“I just want to get away from all this divisiveness and consternation all the time and arguing. I like to see people get along and work positively and co-operatively together,” Cormican said. “And of course I want the best for here and I’ve already been working on that, talking with individuals, groups, you name it.”
