You know Lethbridge residents are mad when they’ll miss the Canada-Russia Olympic hockey game to attend a meeting. But then, the one thing that would make them mad enough to miss the game is an opportunity to express their concerns about government. “There are no incentives for politicians to do the right thing,” Lethbridge resident Joseph Quesnel said while waiting for the meeting to start. The meeting was organized by the Citizens for Better Governance, an organization created by a handful of citizens who share a common concern: they’re fed up with the lack of transparency and accountability in government. During her year as Miss Blackfoot Canada, Andrea True Joy Fox was blessed with numerous opportunities that continue to help her as time goes by. Fox, who was 2008 Miss Blackfoot Canada and in the top five at the Miss Indian World competition, is pageant co-ordinator for this year’s event, which coincides this weekend with the 10th annual International Peace Powwow at the Enmax Centre. “The pageant experience gives young women an opportunity to evaluate where they’re at as far as goals and accomplishments up to this point in their lives, and to think about where they want to go in their future,” said Fox, a teacher at Ecole St. Mary’s School in Lethbridge.

Fort Macleod Mayor Shawn Patience came away from a meeting with Solicitor General Frank Oberle and Treasury Board President Lloyd Snelgrove Tuesday with a few more answers but no firm commitment. “We were told that the model that is before us and before the government is not sustainable, which is the first time we’ve ever been told that,” Patience said in a telephone interview Tuesday evening. “I have to say it came as a very big surprise to us, considering this project is 10 years old already and Price Waterhouse Coopers was brought in to develop the funding model so that it was sustaining.” Patience said he and town councillors were very candid with Snelgrove and Oberle about their frustrations. The province announced a police academy would be built in the town in 2006, with construction slated to begin the following year. Fast forward to the 2010 budget when the province still couldn’t find funding for the project. Patience and town councillors have pressed the matter and they learned Tuesday they may have a big hitter on their side.
