A 51-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in the 1992 slaying of an Edmonton man in the Crowsnest Pass appeared briefly in Lethbridge provincial court Wednesday.
Michael Desmarais was charged with the murder in 1993, but had to await the completion of a lengthy U.S. sentence for murder before his return to Canadian soil.
In early July 1992, Gordon Mills told his family he was going on a Rockies sightseeing excursion and was expected to return home in four or five days. He was last seen at a gas station in Banff before his body was found almost two months later near Leitch Colleries, east of the Crowsnest Pass. An autopsy revealed Mills had been shot and was likely the cause of death.

He’s a longtime Conservative, raised in Claresholm and now a businessman in Calgary. But Mark Dyrholm is so unhappy with Premier Ed Stelmach and his top cabinet ministers, he’s running to take over his job.
One of three leadership candidates for the Wildrose Alliance, Dyrholm is heading to southern Alberta on Saturday. He’ll be meeting supporters in Taber, Lethbridge, Cardston, Fort Macleod and hometown Claresholm.
Dyrholm, along with two challengers, will also be taking part in a party-organized Lethbridge rally on Sept. 15. But since announcing his candidacy in mid-June, he’s hit the road to take the pulse of voters in all parts of the province.
“A lot of people are really happy to see a candidate with real Reform party credentials,” he said in an interview. “Albertans finally see something that reflects where they’re headed.”
Formerly vice-president of an independent business group in Calgary, Dyrholm says he served on the campaign team for Ron Liepert (now health minister) and also got involved in the Conservatives’ leadership race.

This definitely wasn’t driving Miss Daisy.
A female driver crashed into seven parked cars outside a southside apartment  complex early Tuesday before driving over a median and smashing through a fence.
Just after 3 a.m., a woman was seen yelling and causing a disturbance outside the apartment complex in the 1600 block of Scenic Drive South. Minutes later, a Chrysler Fifth Avenue with a woman at the wheel pulled into the parking lot, struck six cars, then turned around and hit another vehicle on the other side of the lot. The Chrysler then bounced over a median, smashed through a fence onto Scenic Drive and headed south.
