The season for giving went way past Christmas for one longtime Lethbridge resident.
John Frouws figured Tuesday was as good as any other day to hand out some gifts so he gave the Lethbridge Food Bank and the Interfaith Food Bank each a cheque for $25,000.
“When we arrived here from Holland we were poor. Everyone helped us and we’ve done pretty well so we’re giving something back,” Frouws said from his living room.

Lethbridge and area residents who have been hit hardest by the current recession are getting help from Lethbridge College.
The college recently introduced Charting Career Change, a free, week-long program designed to help unemployed workers get back into the workforce, and courses kicked off Monday.

To boldly go where no man has gone before was a Star Trek motto and the same might be said for Canadian astronaut Dr. Bob Thirsk. He was captivated by space as a youngster and is scheduled to take part in Canada’s first expedition to the International Space Station.

Paying all city employees a “living wage” would not end poverty in Lethbridge.
But as part of a broader approach, says an Alberta advocacy group, policy initiatives like that would see fewer Alberta children and families scraping to survive.

As if the recession wasn’t bad enough, businesses already struggling to keep their heads above water have also been hit with increases to their licence fees.
The city raised fees this year “across the board,” but some have gone up more than others. Historically, home busineses particularly music teachers, have complained they are unfairly treated by the city.
