Change in store for U of L administrator Print E-mail

After 10 years as vice-president of research at the University of Lethbridge, Dennis Fitzpatrick has decided to swap one fruit for another.
On Canada Day, instead of rising at 5:30 a.m. and turning on his Apple laptop, Fitzpatrick went into the kitchen and whipped up some blueberry pancakes.
After a decade of a driven career pairing eager researchers with funders, Fitzpatrick figured it was time for a change.
“I would just like to find greater balance in my life,” he said. “I have a number of quite interesting projects in the works but I’m taking six weeks off. I haven’t had a decent vacation in a number of years.”

Alberta’s tire recycling program has hit the 50-million mark and counting.
Brad Schultz of Edmonton, tire recycling program director for the Alberta Recycling Management Authority, said Friday Canada’s first tire recycling operation started in 1992 is up to 5.5 million tires collected from 2,200 tire retailers a year, a rate projected again for 2009.

When a Member of the Legislative Assembly steps out of line, the party’s leader must demand an apology.
That’s the call from Liberal Leader David Swann, following accusations from a retired sergeant-at-arms of the Alberta legislature. Oscar Lacombe, invited to a retirement celebration for one of his successors this May, says he was “verbally attacked in the most vicious manner” by Cardston-Warner-Taber MLA Broyce Jacobs.

Marj relies on faith to help her heal from devastating accident Print E-mail

In the blink of an eye, Marj Machen went from being a fitness trainer and accomplished athlete to a paraplegic in a wheelchair, contemplating her future.
The 42-year-old mother of four and grandmother of two was living in Texas last December when she was knocked off her bicycle by a distracted driver who was talking on a cellphone. Her numerous injuries included a broken neck, and she is paralyzed from her midsection down, with limited mobility in her hands.
