Seventy down, two to go. Facing the Medicine Hat Tigers in a home-and-home series Friday and Saturday, the Lethbridge Hurricanes will close the books on their 2009-10 Western Hockey League season. And while the 20-42-5-3 Hurricanes will try to avoid tying a franchise record for fewest wins in a season and then take on the spectators’ role as the post season begins, what season would be complete without year-end awards? With that in mind, here’s a one-panel judge vote on Hurricanes individual award winners for the 2009-10 season.

It’s a provincial championship that’s doubling as a dress rehearsal for nationals. Judoka from across Alberta hit the mat at the 1st Choice Savings Centre as the Lethbridge Kyodokan Judo Club hosted the 2010 Junior/Senior Provincials Saturday afternoon. But while the club was focused on making sure the provincial event ran smoothly, the all-Alberta event also doubled as preparation for the Canadian Junior Nationals, which the club will host July 2-4. “It’s meant to be a trial run for nationals,” said Ben Kwan, one of the club’s sensei. “So one of the thing you see that are different are the TVs, (which) we’re using as scoreboards. The (mat) underlay was purchased for nationals for another level of safety for all the competitors. We’ll have a lot of new things to try out before nationals.”

Over 20 years ago, Alvin Powell fell into an abyss of addiction that cost him a career in the National Football League and nearly his life. As he stood in front of a gym full of students at Allan Watson High School Friday, the former offensive lineman for the Seattle Seahawks and Miami Dolphins did so in hopes that those students don’t walk the same path he did. “I can’t believe I’m here at Allan Watson School, all the way across the country. This is alright,” said Watson — who now lives in Montreal where he runs the Saving Station Foundation. “But let me tell you something right off the get-go. I am not here to convince you kids of anything. I do not work that way. I’m just here to to give you a message in hopes that some of what I share with you here today will help you make the right decisions for yourselves and not the stupid decisions I made.”

Bryan Maxwell has continued another family tradition. And this time, he didn’t have to endure a skate across Henderson Lake in the face of a Lethbridge breeze in order to do it. On Thursday, the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame announced Maxwell will join its list of inductees in the athlete’s category at the Hall of Fame’s 25th Anniversary Induction Ceremony May 1. “To be able to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in your hometown where you played all your sports your whole life growing up is a huge honour,” said Maxwell, who is being inducted into the athlete category of the hall.

It all starts here. And if Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs head coach Blair Kubicek has his way, the ultimate destination will be the major leagues. A total of nine major league scouts were on hand at Lloyd Nolan Yard Tuesday afternoon to get a firsthand glimpse of the talent the Dawgs will take the diamond with this season at Dawgs annual ID camp. “What we do here is expose our guys to some of that stuff early,” said Kubicek, adding the scouts were also out at the Vauxhall Baseball Academy earlier in the day. “They come here because over the years I think we’ve had 29 guys that have been in the program that have been drafted and we still have four playing professional baseball. So they want to see these guys early and make sure they’re on top of anybody that might be draftable this year. They follow up with what they call pocket follows. They can say ‘Hey, that guy’s pretty interesting. We should let our organization know about when he leaves here.’”
