Bryan Maxwell has continued another family tradition.
And this time, he didn’t have to endure a skate across Henderson Lake in the face of a Lethbridge breeze in order to do it.
On Thursday, the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame announced Maxwell will join its list of inductees in the athlete’s category at the Hall of Fame’s 25th Anniversary Induction Ceremony May 1.
“To be able to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in your hometown where you played all your sports your whole life growing up is a huge honour,” said Maxwell, who is being inducted into the athlete category of the hall.

It all starts here. And if Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs head coach Blair Kubicek has his way, the ultimate destination will be the major leagues.
A total of nine major league scouts were on hand at Lloyd Nolan Yard Tuesday afternoon to get a firsthand glimpse of the talent the Dawgs will take the diamond with this season at Dawgs annual ID camp.
“What we do here is expose our guys to some of that stuff early,” said Kubicek, adding the scouts were also out at the Vauxhall Baseball Academy earlier in the day. “They come here because over the years I think we’ve had 29 guys that have been in the program that have been drafted and we still have four playing professional baseball. So they want to see these guys early and make sure they’re on top of anybody that might be draftable this year. They follow up with what they call pocket follows. They can say ‘Hey, that guy’s pretty interesting. We should let our organization know about when he leaves here.’”

How ’bout those Olympics, eh! They absolutely transcended sports.
For many in this area high school basketball is a major social and cultural presence too. To those folks, March is simply a wonderful time of year. Events over the next week-plus certainly provide many opportunities to start the month of revely with a bang.
Regular season play leaps to completion this week. The associated Southern Alberta High School Girls and 4A Boys Basketball Leagues (www.SouthHoops.ca) have an overflowing slate. By Saturday, varsity champs will be determined, since there are no league varsity playoffs.

You snooze, you lose Print E-mail

The puck was slated to drop at 7 p.m.
The Moose Jaw Warriors were fully aware of this, but apparently the Lethbridge Hurricanes were not as the Warriors rolled to a 4-0 victory over the Hurricanes in Western Hockey League action Tuesday night at the Enmax Centre.
Cashing in on the ’Canes’ slow start, Warrior Dylan Hood scored the eventual game-winner a mere 26 seconds after the puck drop and Moose Jaw never trailed as netminder Jeff Bosch turned aside all 31 shots he faced to earn the shutout.
“It was a classic case of not being ready to play,” said Hurricanes head coach Rich Preston, whose teams drops to 19-40-5-3. “A classic, classic case of not being ready to play and that’s when you get hurt. Three or four guys almost got hurt out there. We weren’t ready to play and on that first shift we got scored on. That’s what happens. And then if you’re not ready to play, it’s too late. You try to get back in the game and then they score another one.”
