Get in there, rookie.
As the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s soccer team ventures into its exhibition season, the first-year players having been seeing ample playing time.
However, Pronghorns head coach Randy Bardock said the rookie-laden lineup over the past few games has been more by circumstance than by design.
With a number of players having just wrapped up their Alberta Major Soccer League season with the Lethbridge FC, a little down time for those players has been a necessity.

Autry Erickson was never a hockey player that lit up the scoresheet, but possessed a smothering defensive game that could put opponents in a vice-like grip.
That is how former teammates Vic Stasiuk and Earl Ingarfield will remember Erickson, the former Lethbridge resident who passed away at his home in Moreno Valley, Calif on Saturday after a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 72.
“We played baseball on the north side. We were neighbours in Boston for one year (1960-1961),” said Stasiuk of Erickson, who played in 226 NHL games with the Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks Toronto Maple Leafs and the Oakland Seals, scoring seven goals and 31 points to go along with 182 penalty minutes.

Look up. Look way up. As they head into their 2010-2011 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference season, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball team may want to borrow that phrase made famous by the Friendly Giant.
That’s because opponents lining up against the Kodiaks this sesason may have to crane their heads in an upward direction.
“Suddenly now we go from the smallest team in the league to probably one of the biggest,” said Kodiaks head coach Mike Hansen. “I’m pretty excited. We have a good core of guys back. I think we’re loaded to make a good run this year.”

Now it comes down to one game. Fighting for their playoff lives and hosting the undefeated Calgary Dinos during Alberta Major Soccer League regular season action Saturday afternoon at the Community Savings Centre, the Lethbridge FC managed to open up a 3-2 lead at halftime, but were unable to hold onto the lead as Calgary scored midway through the second half as the teams battled to a 3-3 tie.
That puts the 7-4-6 FC in a must-win situation as the team heads to Calgary today to round out their regular season against the Calgary Pars, who sit two points ahead of the FC after losing to the Edmonton Green and Gold on Saturday.
“We need to take care of business (today),” said FC head coach Sean Carey. “If we win we’re guaranteed to be in the playoffs. It’s been a great effort from these guys this season.”

A lacrosse stick always felt right in Cameron Windle’s hands. Now, that national medal hanging around his neck is looking pretty slick, too.
The 16-year-old lacrosse player headed west to Coquitlam, B.C. to suit up with Team Alberta at the 2010 Lacrosse Canada Cup Aug. 15-20 and returned home a silver medalist after Alberta advanced to the gold medal game, losing 4-2 to Iroquois.
“It was a really great experience,” said Windle, the third lacrosse player out of southern Alberta to suit up at the national level since Darren Andre and Andrew Eng did in 2005 in bantam and peewee, respectively. “It was the highest level of lacrosse I’ve ever played. It was a big tournament, a bit more than I expected it would be. Our team did quite well. It was the best Alberta has ever done at the tournament.”
