The day after Print E-mail
Written by Dale Woodard
Thursday, 10 December 2009
Back to the grind.
A day after pulling the trigger on a deal that sent forwards Carter Ashton and Craig Orfino as well as a third-round pick to the Regina Pats in exchange for Graham Hood, Tayler Balog, a second-round pick in the 2010 WHL bantam draft and a first-round pick in the 2011 bantam draft, it was back to business for the Lethbridge Hurricanes as the team hit the ice for practice Thursday at the Enmax Centre.
As his charges wound down with some stretches at centre ice, the focus was back on the task at hand — getting ready to host the Pats Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Enmax Centre.

Carter Ashton and Craig Orfino will indeed be at the Enmax Centre Friday when the Lethbridge Hurricanes host the Regina Pats in Western Hockey League action.
However, they’ll be making a detour to the visitors dressing room rather than the Hurricanes dressing room.
The Hurricanes announced Wednesday they have traded Ashton and Orfino as well as a third round pick in the 2010 WHL bantam draft to the Regina Pats in exchange for Graham Hood, Taylor Balog, a second-round draft pick in the 2010 WHL bantam draft and a first round pick in the 2011 bantam draft.
While he’s firmly focused on the present, the move also casts a glance to the future.

Basketball leagues are now in full flight Print E-mail

Invitational hoop tournaments often attract a great deal of attention in this area. There’s no doubt they have substantial appeal. But, to me, the backbone of the local high school roundball scene is league play.
I’m aware of five circuits in the area, including the River Ridge, Chinook, Deep South and associated Southern Alberta High School Girls and Southern Alberta High School 4A Boys Basketball Leagues.
I was happy to see Chinook and Deep South results in this paper last week. Hopefully all of the loops will publicize their results throughout the year.
As someone who helps organize the Southern Alberta outfits I’ll do my best to make sure that info is disseminated to local media. As well, those with internet access can follow along in detail by making www.SouthHoops.ca a favourite. I look forward to receiving schedules from the other local leagues.

Machacek happy to come home Print E-mail
Written by Dylan Purcell

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are desperate to score some goals.
That might be the reason the team’s press release Monday described Cason Machacek as a forward.
Alas, the Lethbridge minor hockey product is not a forward. Nor is he known for scoring goals from his defensive position.
But he might be just what the Hurricanes need.
The ’Canes acquired Machacek from the Kootenay Ice for a fourth round pick in next year’s bantam draft, making Lori and Perry Machacek two of the happier parents in Lethbridge Monday. Of course, with Cason returning home after a year and a half away, plans for a hot tub where his room was will be put on hold.
“Yeah, they might have to make an adjustment,” laughed Cason after being asked about his old room. “I haven’t been home for a while so they’re probably going to have to make some room.”

Canes lose Print E-mail

It was a hot finish for the Lethbridge Hurricanes, but a stone-cold opening 40 minutes that rivalled the current cold snap ultimately proved costly with a 4-3 loss.
Hosting the Medicine Hat Tigers during Western Hockey League action Monday night at the Enmax Centre, the ’Canes were held to a scant nine shots in the first 40 minutes, trailing 3-0 heading into the second intermission.
While Lethbridge starting finding the net in the final period, the Tigers added one more goal to hit the road with a 4-3 win.
“We weren’t good, I don’t know why,” said Hurricanes head coach Rich Preston, whose team falls to 9-17-3-1 with the loss. “It shouldn’t have to come from the coaches to get them all riled up.”
