Stanley Cup a family affair for the Versteegs Print E-mail

So what does it feel like to watch your son hoist the Stanley Cup over his head?
Good question.
And while Roy Versteeg was indeed able to watch his son, Kris, be crowned a Stanley Cup champion last week when the Chicago Blackhawks downed the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final, the senior Versteeg conceded the words to describe it were hard to find.
“It’s surreal, really,” said Roy. “You’re standing there and you know it’s real, but it really isn’t. It’s so far out there. It’s a pretty hard question to answer. You know how proud you are of him and proud of everything they’ve done.”

This is going to be one game of road hockey on Larkspur Road and Honeysuckle that won’t be forgotten any time soon.
And this time as Kris Versteeg and his neighbourhood buddies grab their hockey sticks and whack a tennis ball around — keeping an eye out for cars in the process — there will be a large, silver mug sitting nearby.
A week removed from Versteeg’s Stanley Cup title with the Chicago Blackhawks following a 4-2 series win over the Philadelphia Flyers in the final, the Stanley Cup is coming to Lethbridge and to the street where it all began for the 24-year-old forward.

Pink Floyd sang it, Kris Versteeg is feeling it. As the celebrations continue following Versteeg and his Chicago Blackhawks teammates’ thrilling Stanley Cup championship win over the Philadelphia Flyers, the 24-year-old lifelong Lethbridge resident is indeed comfortably numb.
“I don’t think it’ll ever sink in,” said Versteeg. “I know the only word I can use to describe all of this is ‘numb’.”
As the reality of his thrilling Stanley Cup win sinks in, the whirlwind pace continues for Versteeg and his Blackhawks teammates in a city stricken with Blackhawks fever.

High school seasons wrap Print E-mail

It’s always the saddest weekend of the year when the last high school sports wrap up.
I have to bid a fond — and temporary — farewell to columnist Dave Wells, who ably covers/promotes/frets over/analyzes the local high school loops. Fortunately, the start of high school football is getting closer.
The weekend saw a great display of prowess from the city’s north side sports park — Sherring Fields, for want of a better name. The facility capably handled the high school rugby provincials all in one convenient location. Craig Patton’s army of helpers — many from Winston Churchill — were fantastic. Credit should be spread around liberally to everyone involved, especially the players.
I am always happy to see local coach and former ’Horns player-turned-coach JJ Ondrus at these events. I joked with her that when she was a university rugby player, it wasn’t the pampered position it is now. JJ drove the bus for the ’Horns in the incipient days of the program.
Really, she drove the bus through rain, sleet and the streets of Vancouver and deserves — along with many of her former teammates — credit for helping the sport grow.
