Florence Senda treads an honourable path. While her husband, Yosh, spent a lifetime dedicated to building a tradition of judo, Florence made sure it was easy for him to be calm and peaceful at every lesson. “I could have made it tough for him,” said Florence with a smile as she watched a handful of judoka receive their Canadian Youth Judo Championship Medals at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium at Lethbridge College Friday. “I never yelled at him. “And he never yelled at his students. He never had to.” Yosh Senda, who died Sept. 9, 2009, was honoured at the event and his wife logged a lot of miles as one of the volunteers — and medal presenters. The miles didn’t even show as Florence placed medal after medal around the necks of presenters. The entire event was dedicated to the memory of Yosh Senda, Canada’s only ninth-degree black belt and sensei to three generations of southern Alberta residents.

Being traded by the salary cap-strapped Chicago Blackhawks didn’t faze Lethbridge’s Kris Versteeg. Fresh off their Stanley Cup victory and continuing to trim their roster to accommodate the salary cap, the Blackhawks traded Versteeg and Bill Sweatt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Viktor Stalberg, Philippe Paradis and Christopher DiDomenico on Wednesday. His name having been thrown into the trade rumour mill since the Stanley Cup win, the trade didn’t surprise Versteeg. "I wasn't shocked when I heard my name, I just didn't know where I was going to go and in the end it was Toronto and I'm ecstatic," said Versteeg in an interview with TSN. "It kind of reminds me of the Blackhawks a couple of years ago when we were rebuilding. I'm excited about the challenge and I'm excited about going to the biggest hockey city in the world."

Every team in the Canadian Hockey League heads into today’s European import draft looking for the next Luca Sbisa or Nino Niederreiter. Every year, clubs spend a ton of money to find out just how precious those players are. For the Lethbridge Hurricanes, it’s the same situation, but head coach and general manager Rich Preston knows the Euro draft is no cure-all, it’s just another way to try to improve your team. Regina Pats general manager Chad Lang told Rob Vanstone of the Regina Leader-Post that the import draft is a “crapshoot.” Preston would add that it’s an expensive crapshoot. He also said the Hurricanes will look to the NHL for some guidance on European players. Picking 46th after swapping spots with the Portland Winterhawks in the Sbisa deal last season, the ’Canes will hope to hedge their bets by making a lot of phone calls and being as careful as possible with the selection. “We went through the league last year and there wasn’t a real impact, difference maker among the Euros,” said Preston. “Except maybe Niederreiter from Portland, so you have to remember that.

Brad Ross and Brandon Davidson are headed to La La Land this weekend. And it’s a safe bet both hockey players will be coming back home singing a different tune as the duo wing it south to Los Angeles for the 2010 NHL entry draft. Two days removed from heading to southern California, Ross said he was simply trying to keep it all in check. “It’s pretty nerve-wracking, but I’m trying not to worry about it,” said the six-foot-one, 173 pound left winger who completed his second full season with the Portland Winterhawks. “I just want to get drafted by a good team and hopefully they have a spot for me in their organization.” After a season in which Ross, who turned 18 May 28, scored 27 goals and 68 points in 71 games to go along with a plus-22 rating and 203 penalty minutes, there are no doubt teams NHL-wide have sat up and taken notice with the local forward expected to go high in this year’s draft, possibly in the first round.
