When Neil Tarnasky, Ryon Moser and Philip Tot took the ice with the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the start of the season, the trio looked very much like rookies trying to get used to play in the Western Hockey League. That’s because they were. As the Hurricanes get set to host the Edmonton Oil Kings tonight at the Enmax Centre at 7 p.m., the trio have been getting icetime and responsibility equivalent to players who have successfully adapted and contributed in a number of ways.

For years the tournament showcased the finest bantam AA and AAA hockey from Western Canada. And for the past five years it has taken place the same weekend as the Lethbridge Athletic Association Service Credit Union Bantam AAA/AA Invitational begins today and runs through Sunday at Henderson and Adams arenas, featuring the Lethbridge Val Matteotti AAA Golden Hawks and the Headwater Equipment AA Hurricanes. “The AAA’s used to do the Pepsi Challenge between Christmas and New Year’s and the AA’s had their own tournament in January. The win puts the Hurricanes record at 15-26-3-2, while the Hitmen improve to 30-15-1-1, good for second place in the Eastern Conference.

The situation gives me the opportunity to provide a smorgasbord of Wellsie wanderings this time around. • • • Basketball is essentially at its mid-season juncture. There are multiple local loops, but the Southern Alberta High School 4A Boys Basketball League (www.SouthHoops.ca) is the only one where seeding criteria for South Zone Championships (slated for March 8-13) is determined solely by regular season league standings. Thus, there is no doubt, every game in the 4A-only circuit has tangible value, which adds to the league’s value as a whole.

It was a clash of the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League titans as the Raymond Comets and Cardston Cougars varsity boys teams squared off Saturday night in Raymond. And winning this round was the hosts as Raymond erased a 42-40 halftime deficit on their way to a 84-78 victory. Jimmy Ralph topped Raymond with 35 points, while Austin Baldry had 14 and Tyson McIntyre chipped in with 13.
