The City of Lethbridge will use $1.3 million from a reserve fund with about $1.5 million in unallocated money to secure $500,000 from the federal Recreational Infrastructure Canada program for sweeping improvements to the westside Nicholas Sheran Leisure Centre. The $1.8-million project has funding in place, city in-house architectural designs are approved and construction will go to tender soon. The project must be completed by March 31, 2011 to meet federal grant guidelines. The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women’s hockey team was most excited.

With exams in the rearview mirror it’s a jam-packed time for local basketball teams. Leagues are in high gear and there’s a plethora of local tournament action. • • • Thanks very much to tourney organizers who got draws in to me this week. I believe it may be an all-time record. The W.R. Myers Rebel Classic VII (yes, I suppose Roman Numerals are appropriate during Super Bowl Week) tips this Thursday in Taber. The ambitious event features eight teams per gender, played at Myers’ St. Mary’s and Central schools. The Myers boys’ division is the last primarily 4A (unlimited enrollment) male tourney in the area this season. It’s a very interesting field indeed. I would imagine at least five entrants have their sights firmly set on qualifying for the 4A provincials hosted by Cardston/Raymond March 18-20. Kudos to the organizers for attracting such a strong aggregation of talent.

It ain’t easy being a young AAA midget hockey team. With players as young as 15, even a one-year age gap can sometimes feel like a decade. The Lethbridge Y’s Men AAA midget Hurricanes beat the Red Deer Rebels 3-1 at Henderson Arena Sunday, a key win against their rivals and the Alberta Midget Hockey League’s South Division leaders. They did it with just four senior players, up against a team boasting 10 17-year-olds. The Chiefs’ age advantage shows in the standings, where the steady presence of a group of second- and even third-year midgets can weather the storms which hit a team through an entire season.

It was Thundersticks Night as the Lethbridge Hurricanes hosted the Prince Albert Raiders during Western Hockey League action Saturday night at the Enmax Centre. Unfortunately for the ’Canes, it was the visitors that made a little noise early and often on the scoresheet, opening up a 3-0 before the game was barely three minutes old and cruising to a 5-1 victory. “When you can’t score goals like we can’t, it’s pretty much game over,” said Hurricanes head coach Rich Preston. “I don’t know what happened there. If you blinked your eyes you missed it.”

The Lethbridge Hurricanes needed all hands on deck. They didn’t have them and the Red Deer Rebels swabbed the deck with them in a 2-1 victory during Western Hockey League action Friday night at the Enmax Centre. The teams battled through two periods of scoreless hockey before Coaldale product Adam Kambeitz scored 1:46 into the third. While the Hurricanes battled back to tie the game thanks to a power-play goal from captain Carter Bancks, Landon Ferraro struck for the game-winner with 7:34 to go.
