The defence doesn’t rest for Jack McDonald. And the shortstop for the Lethbridge Southwest All-Stars has backed that up by turning into a human highlight reel as the 2010 Junior Little League Canadian Championship hits McDonald’s Spitz Stadium home field. "He's been playing pretty solid defence for us,” said All-Stars coach Scott Nishikawa Tuesday evening prior to the All Stars game against the Orleans Red Sox from Ontario. “We really don’t have a prototypical shortstop, but Jack has stepped in and he’s done a great job for us. His hitting has come around a lot in the past couple of years, but his defence has always been pretty solid.”

The Lethbridge Southwest All Stars started with a big inning. Unfortuately, their opponents put up three big innings as the Orleans Red Sox Junior A from Ontario handed the All Stars an 11-6 loss that eliminates Lethbridge from the playoffs during the 2010 Junior Little League Canadian Championship Tuesday night at Spitz Stadium. After giving up three runs in the top of the first, the All Stars posted four of their own in their half of the first to take a 4-3 lead and while the teams battled to a 6-6 draw heading into the seventh inning, Ontario — who also scored three runs in the fourth inning — blew the game open with five runs in the top of the seventh to take an 11-6 lead.

The 2010 Canadian Junior Little League Championship served up some crow to one fan Monday, when the Coquitlam All-Stars beat the Medicine Hat Diamondbacks 19-17 at Spitz Stadium. There isn’t a lot of heckling in Little League baseball, and most of the vitriol is saved for the men in blue, but when Cole Dowling jogged across the backstop at Spitz Stadium to warm up in the on-deck circle, one fan let him have it. “Hey, number four, did you lose something?” she said as Dowling warmed up behind Javeed Khankashi, who is a righthanded hitter. To avoid being drilled with a foul ball, Dowling, with the umpires permission, jogged to the on-deck circle in front of the Medicine Hat bench. It is a common occurrence at Little League games, and both teams took advantage of it in this game.

Tristan Thiessen stepped up to the plate with an opportunity to be a hero. Facing the spotlight of the Canadian Junior Little League Baseball Championship and a crowd of fans whose emotions ranged from hopeful to downright desperate, Thiessen dug into the batters’ box at Spitz Stadium. There were two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the game was tied 17-17 and Thiessen had a lot on his mind. “I was pretty nervous,” said the left-fielder, who watched the first pitch run through his strike zone before whiffing on the second pitch from Sydney Mines’ Christopher Osmond. “I wanted either a line drive or a ground ball. It was really just, I didn’t want to strike out and knew if I could keep fouling off pitches, I’d eventually hit one.” Hit one he did, lashing a 1-2 pitch between Ramblers’ shortstop Mitchell Foss and second base, allowing Tanner Shirakawa to rush home and end the game.

Members of the Coquitlam Little League Junior All Stars have shown they have little problem getting with the program. Now, as the All Stars head into the Junior Little League Canadian Championship as the two-time champions looking to make it a hat trick, they have stability in a baseball program back home in B.C. to thank for it. “The kids buy into the program and they know coming out of the Major Program, ages 11-12, that there’s success at the junior level, so they stay with our program,” said coach Wes Taylor, whose team kicked off the tournament on a winning note, downing the Sydney Mines Ramblers 15-5 as action began Saturday at Spitz Stadium. “They don’t go to other leagues or other types of baseball that’s available in British Columbia. They stick with the program with the Little League program through the Junior Program and that makes it easy for the coaches to develop the program.”
