Now that’s a history lesson the Catholic Central High School Cougars can sink their claws into. The subject? Gridiron 101. One 57-0 victory over the Winston Churchill High School Bulldogs later, Cougars head coach Mike Nightingale brandished his marker and handed his team an “A” for their performance Friday night at the University of Lethbridge Stadium that kicked off both team’s Southern Alberta High School Football League regular season and the community’s newest sports gem.

Yosh Senda was not a loud man. Considering he could send a strong message to his judo students with a single stare, he didn’t need to be. That is how one of the most respected coaches in judo’s legacy will ring for years for many of his students. Senda, sensei of Lethbridge’s Kyodokan Judo Club, died Wednesday. He was 87.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes busted out the new jerseys they’ll sport for the 2009-2010 Western Hockey League season on Wednesday. Of course, with an extended road jaunt throughout the exhibition season and into the regular season, fans will have to wait a month before they get an in-game glimpse at the new silks when the ’Canes stage their home-opener Oct. 9 when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings. The Canadian Hockey League, in association with Reebok Hockey, announced Wednesday the league-wide launch of the Reebok EDGE Uniform System for the top major junior hockey league in the world. Each of the CHL’s 60 teams introduced new home and away EDGE jersey designs for the 2009-10 hockey season.

Tadjdeh busy in 'Canes loss Sunday |

If Michael Tadjdeh is looking to establish himself as the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ top goaltender, he got a lot of chances to prove himself Sunday in Coleman. The Hurricanes lost 5-3 in exhibition play against the Kootenay Ice at the Coleman Sports Complex, but last year’s backup netminder stopped 51 of the 56 shots he faced, including all 19 in the first period.

First up is newcomer Ville Kolppanen, the Finnish netminder who will celebrate his 17th birthday in the crease tonight as the ’Canes kick off their exhibition schedule against the Calgary Hitmen at a neutral-site game in Coleman.
