Who are those people? You’ll have to excuse the Lethbridge Orcas Summer Swim Club is they were making a spectacle of themselves at the 2010 Alberta Provincials last weekend in Edmonton. Hauling in 44 medals — including 23 gold — and winning the club’s first provincial title since 1987 will do that. “We were favoured, but we really came out of nowhere,” said Orcas head coach Kent Aitchison. “Two years ago we were 21st and we were seventh last year. We started making some noise the first day. There were a bunch of people asking about us. We were loud and cheering for each other and we were showing what we were made of on the scoreboard, too. People were turning their heads and asking ‘Who are these guys?’”

Hey rookie, slide over and make some room. The quarters will be cramped when the Lethbridge Hurricanes open up camp later this month. But while players attending the camp can bank on being crammed into the dressing rooms at the Adams Ice Centre like sardines, you won’t hear Hurricanes head coach and general manager Rich Preston muttering about the living situations. “We’re trying to squeeze another dressing room into Adams,” said Preston with a grin at the Hurricanes annual general meeting Wednesday night at the Ramada Inn. “We have a few more players than we though we’d have. But we get more invitees that want to come here as opposed to other teams, that happens. You send out an invite list of players that weren’t invited and players you like. Players that weren’t drafted will have three or four more invites from Western Hockey League teams. You look at a team’s record and there’s a better chance to get listed or make our team. We’ve got a few more than we wanted, but that’s fine. On our last two days of camp we’ll have four teams scrimmaging and we had three last year.”

With their playoff lives hanging in the balance, Lethbridge FC delivered. Facing the Calgary Villains in Alberta Major Soccer League action Tuesday in Calgary, the FC scored once in the first half and then added a pair in the final half to hang on for a 3-2 win that clinches Lethbridge a postseason berth. “This was for the playoffs, we were two points behind the Villains,” said FC head coach Sean Carey, whose team improves to 7-4-5 on the season with two games left in the regular season. “This was a must-win. The boys came out firing. This was probably their best performance of the year, in my book. We only had 12 players as well, but the boys came through. It was their best defensive play of the season. They really deserved the win.”

The whole package |

The complete package, the full-meal deal, the whole enchilada. The Lethbridge Hurricanes are well aware they’re going to have to combine all three if they hope to host the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup. And while the team intends to make hockey front and centre as they vie for the four-team Canadian Hockey League championship, Hurricanes president Brian McNaughton said showing a little dazzle off the ice is also being stressed as the team continues to prepare its bid. “The dollar guarantee is obviously going to be a factor, but I also believe it’s also going to be the entire event and entertainment package that we can put together,” said McNaughton, whose team will hold its annual general meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at the Ramada Inn. “I think those are the three things we’re focused on. We’re a mid-market team that’s been a partner for a long time. We think with the dollar number we can be competitive, but I also thing we’re prepared to work really hard to make this a hockey event primarily, but to (also) complement that with other events and entertainment.”

It was no surprise to her Lethbridge Swim Club coaches that Rachel Nicol won a gold medal at the Youth Olympics in Singapore Monday. Nicol and wrestler Dori Yeats earned Canada’s first gold medals at the Youth Olympics in Singapore Monday. Nicol beat the field with a personal best time of 32.06 in the 50-metre breaststroke, which was .38 seconds faster than silver medallist Martina Carraro of Italy. “It feels great to get the gold,” Nicol 17, told the Canadian Press. “I wasn’t sure what kind of results to expect here but after doing so well in the prelims and semis I was feeling more pressure. But it was a tough year of training and it really paid off in the end.” The tough year included a grueling schedule of events and a nagging groin injury. It added up to a poor performance at last month’s senior nationals. LA Swim Club head coach Brad Mori said Nicol was “emotionally tired” at that point, but he added it’s all part of growing into a top-flight swimmer. “It has been a tough year, but she wants to get to this level, so she has to get that mental side of her game ready,” said Mori. “I think if you look at this result and some of the other results she’s gotten this season, she can be happy with the overall growth.”
