It’s dress rehearsal time for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s basketball team.
With their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference playoff spot wrapped up, the Kodiaks round out their regular season this weekend when the Red Deer Queens pay a visit to the Val Matteotti gymnasium tonight at 6 p.m. and again on Saturday at 1 p.m.
And while the Kodiaks aren’t about to look past the 7-11 Queens, they are sneaking a peak to the first round of the playoffs next weekend when they host the Grant MacEwan Griffins in the ACAC quarter-finals.

'Canes can't buck the Broncos |

The shot clock told one story, the final tally on the scoreboard told another.
Hosting the Swift Current Broncos in Western Hockey League action Wednesday night at the Enmax Centre, the Lethbridge Hurricanes nearly doubled their opponents on the shot clock 30-16, but four of those Broncos shots — two on the power play found twine while the ’Canes managed a single tally on their way to a 4-1 loss.
Hurricanes head coach Rich Preston felt his team was the better one, man-to-man.
“I thought we outplayed them and we were the better team. Not even close, not even close,” said Hurricanes head coach Rich Preston. “We were the better team, (but) Linden (Rowat, netminder) will tell you he let in a couple soft goals and we have to score more than one.”

There’s a very light slate of local high school athletic action this week, with Family Day and a major teacher’s convention on hand. However, it’s the calm before one heck of a storm.

Take the associated Southern Alberta High School Girls and 4A Boys Basketball Leagues (www.SouthHoops.ca) for example. Approximately one-third of the season schedule is crammed into the last 11 days starting next Tuesday, Feb. 23!
The South Zone Basketball Championships go March 8-13, with Alberta Schools Athletic Association Provincial Championships (4A co-hosted by Raymond and Cardston) March 18-20. Then there’s a slate of league all-star games the following week.

’Canes not done just yet |

There’s still something for the Lethbridge Hurricanes to play for. The cold, hard Western Hockey League stats tell the cold, hard truth, a berth in the post season is most likely a pipe dream for the 'Canes, almost mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.
But as the 17-36-4-2 Hurricanes get set to host the Swift Current Broncos at 7 p.m. tonight at the Enmax Centre, pride remains front-and-centre as Lethbridge looks to perhaps play the role of the spoiler and, most importantly, give the teams they'll face on the remainder of their schedule a tough battle despite what their record says.

Canes lose |

It was Valentine’s Day, but the Calgary Hitmen didn’t have that loving feeling.
In fact, the only thing the Hitmen were sweet on was a quick start, lots of shots and sustained pressure on their way to a 6-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes during Western Hockey League action Sunday afternoon at the Enmax Centre.
The Hitmen opened up a 3-0 lead after the first period that chased Hurricanes starting netminder Brandon Anderson in favour of Linden Rowat and bagged another three goals in the second to build up a lead that was never threatened despite Lethbridge scoring twice in the third.
“We were asleep,” said Hurricanes head coach Rich Preston, whose team falls to 17-36-4-2 with the loss. “Our goaltender was asleep in the first period and we were asleep. (It was) 3-0 and it’s tough to come back from 3-0. We stood around too much.”
The Hitmen hit the scoresheet first thanks to a little banging in the crease as Tyler Fiddler shoved home his 26th goal of the season 9:06 in.
Calgary went up 2-0 while in a four-on-four situation when Zak Stebner’s point shot went high and glove side past Anderson with 5:51 left in the first.
Austin Fyten nearly got Lethbridge on the board with a little over three minutes left in the first, but was unable to stuff a sharp angle shot past Hitmen netminder Michael Snider.
