Help some local athletes in their Olympic pursuit and tap your toes to some music. Those attending the first Olympic Athletes MusicFest July 13 will get the chance to do both when the event takes the stage. In a joint effort with the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame and the Kinsmen Club of Lethbridge, a bevy of bands will plug and rock out in a fundraiser to aid former University of Lethbridge Pronghorn athletes Jim Steacy and Carla Pavan achieve their Olympic goal in the hammer throw and skeleton racing, respectively.

Was it a baseball game or Bizarro World? Fans making the trek out to Spitz Stadium to watch the Lethbridge Bulls host the Medicine Hat Mavericks in Western Major Baseball League action may have been wondering just that. Why? Probably because the assortment of errors, blown leads, regained leads, a scorecard snafu, a borderline streaker and a nearly-decapitated first base umpire had fans looking skyward, wondering if there was a full moon. While the moon was almost full, amid all the wackiness the Bulls managed to hang on for a 6-4 victory that closes out their eight-game homestand at 7-1 and improves them to 15-12.

Rich Preston is not a great orator. What Preston is, is the Lethbridge Hurricanes’ new general manager and head coach and, despite the monotone delivery, he’s excited to be here. The Western Hockey League team’s much-maligned board of directors introduced Preston at the Ramada Lethbridge’s Coulee Room Tuesday afternoon, a sigh of relief after a search which began May 8. That’s when the Hurricanes announced that head coach Mike Dyck wouldn’t return. General manager Roy Stasiuk followed three days later. Preston started helping the Hurricanes at the June 26 NHL entry draft. He made a few inquiries about European players on behalf of the team while negotiations were ongoing.

Bulls offer best Canada Day experience |

The best place to be on Canada Day is a beach in Hawaii. Or Disneyland. But if you can’t make it there, get to Spitz Stadium. Without a doubt, the best show in town will be the Lethbridge Bulls’ doubleheader against the Edmonton Prospects. Tickets are dirt cheap, the concessions are awesome and, thanks to a three-game winning streak, the baseball is better than ever. Head coach Scott Rhodes has his players in a great position and with a pair of wins, they’re ahead of Edmonton in the Western Major Baseball League standings, so get out and enjoy yourselves at the park all day. The Bulls are kicking it off with a pancake breakfast from 8-11 a.m. Then you can walk around Henderson Lake Park for a bit before returning to the stadium at 1 p.m. for Game 1. Take another stroll down by the lake before coming back for Game 2 at 7:35 p.m.

Somebody break this team up. The Lethbridge Bulls won their third straight Western Major Baseball League game Sunday, an 8-6 victory over the Weyburn Beavers Sunday night at Spitz Stadium that evened up the their record at 11-11 and means maybe things have turned around for the club after struggling earlier in the season.
