Comets ready for provincials Print E-mail

They’re a hard bunch to please, that Raymond Comets basketball team. Fresh off their thrilling South Zone championship win over rival Cardston Cougars last Saturday, the Comets head into the Alberta Schools Athletic Association 4A provincials not only as the number-one seed in the 16-team field, they will do so as a co-host along with the Cardston Cougars, earning them the chance to play in front of what will no doubt be packed gymnasiums of loud supporters.
But until they can hang a 2010 provincial banner in their gym, that won’t be enough.
“It’s been a funny group that way because that hasn’t affected them,” said Comets head coach Todd Heggie, whose team kicks off their provincial run when they face the 16th-ranked Grande Prairie Composite High School Tomahawks at 5 p.m. in Raymond. “They’ve never felt satisfied, even where they have been ranked and they’ve still got that hunger to prove themselves. They have the type of mentality right now that people around the province might be doubting that we should be in that position. So they’ve got something to prove. They’re hungry to show everybody we belong where they’ve got us and feel like nobody is going to push them aside. As a coach, I’m happy to see that rather than be satisfied being at the top.”

Really big show at U of L, Cardston and Raymond this week Print E-mail

It could be simply amazing. Heck, even better than that! I’ve been following the local high school basketball scene rather closely since 1973. In that time two area teams have never met in the unlimited enrolment (known as 4A since 1975) boys’ provincial hoop championship game when it was held in this area. (It’s happened elsewhere in the mentioned time-frame at least four times, including last year.)
If seedings hold, that sure-to-be-remarkable event will take place this Saturday night in the University of Lethbridge 1st Choice Savings Centre.
Raymond (No. 1 boys’ seed) and Cardston (No. 2 boys’ seed) are co-hosting both genders of Alberta Schools Athletic Association 4A Basketball Provincials, Thursday-Saturday. Realizing the potential crowd size, they will use U of L for the Friday boys’ semis, plus both genders of consolation finals and medal games on Saturday.

My friend, from the big city, asked me what was so special about Lethbridge?
“Nothing,” I said.
What I should have done was invite him down for a visit last weekend.
I’d take him to Zone basketball in Lethbridge.

Preston wants playoffs Print E-mail

Rich Preston has thrown down the gauntlet.
One day after the Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up a 20-44-5-3 regular season that saw them finish well out of playoff contention, the general manager and head coach said it won’t happen in 2010-11.
“We’re going to make the playoffs next year and whatever we have to do, we’ll do it,” said Preston. “If we have to trade and get some more scoring or whatever it is, we’re going to do it. Obviously we made a lot of changes to get the team we wanted to have and the players we wanted to have. We still have a lot of that to do, but I think we’re getting there.”

These youngsters are getting a little experience.
And on Saturday night the Raymond Comets basketball team also got a little older and wiser as they topped the Cardston Cougars 101-94 in front of nearly 2,500 spectators who jammed the 1st Choice Savings Centre to capture the 4A South Zone boys’ title.
Now as the Comets and Cougars get set to host the 4A provincial championships, head coach Todd Heggie sees a team that’s peaking at the right time. Provincials go March 18-20, with the girls final at 6 p.m. at the U of L and the boys at 8 p.m.
