It’s time for ‘Theomania’ to begin

“Theomania” has officially begun. As the 22-year-old Coaldale native and University of Lethbridge student gears up for another week of tough competition on the popular television series “Canadian Idol,” city residents are gearing up to show all the support they can during his quest to be the best.
Tams will hit the stage to wow the judges again Monday night and the U of L is getting set to host a free community viewing of the “Unplugged” edition of the show at 8 p.m. in the Students’ Union Ballrooms. The show will feature former Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale.
A 12-by-14-foot “Vote for Theo” banner will also be unveiled on University Drive on Monday at 1 p.m. and more than 55,000 “Vote for Theo” posters will be distributed throughout southern Alberta through the Lethbridge Herald and regional newspapers.
Readers are encouraged to take part in Theomania by cutting out the posters and hanging it in their business or other prominent locations.
If all goes according to plan, it’ll be like Kalanmania all over again.
“The show has definitely gained in popularity. I can only imagine that a lot of people in Lethbridge are going to get behind him, meet him, and help him move forward with his career,” said Tanya Jacobson-Gundlock, one of the organizers of the events at the university planned for Theo. “Any time we can support our students, we are more than happy to do so.”
This week, Tams came another step closer to the Canadian Idol crown, advancing to the Top 8 after his performance of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry.”
Tams has received much praise from the judges thus far and has been called the most well-rounded performer to grace a Canadian Idol stage.
Like many Lethbridge residents, Jacobson-Gundlock feels Tams has a good chance to go all the way after viewing this week’s performance and placing her vote.
“He’s incredibly talented. It’s not just that he’s from Lethbridge that I would vote for him,” she said. “He’s an excellent singer and an excellent musician. Any time you can put Lethbridge on the map and can really get behind some of our local talent is great.”
Fellow Albertans Amberly Thiessen of Seven Persons — perhaps his biggest competition — and Earl Stevenson of Lloydminster join Tams in the final eight.
The only Albertan to claim the coveted singing title was Medicine Hat’s Kalan Porter in 2004. As he began climbing the ranks to the top, he became one of the top newsmakers across the country. Dubbed Kalanmania, fans flocked to local venues in their Porter T-shirts to watch the curly blond-haired teen rise to the top.
Will this summer turn into the summer of Theomania? Stay tuned. It’s still anybody’s guess.
