The city’s social housing committee is worried a possible lack of federal funding may eventually force it to put some formerly homeless clients back on the street.
Although the Social Housing in Action committee has federal and provincial money confirmed through 2009 to fund a variety of emergency shelters and transition homes in the city, the group still has no commitment of federal dollars beyond then.
“We’re getting a little bit antsy,” Gary Bowie, committee chairman, said Monday after addressing city council on how it plans to share more than$1.6 million in provincial and federal money among local shelters and social agencies.
A couple of programs that are funded solely with federal money would be cut off if Ottawa doesn’t renew its current commitments beyond 2009, he said.
“There are a couple of programs that would be in real trouble,” he said. “Immediately there would be people out in the street.”
For the 2008-09 fiscal year, SHIA has more than $1.2 million in provincial money and a further $394,000 in federal funding. The money is divided among various agencies which aid the city’s homeless by providing emergency shelter, outreach services, transition housing, transportation and other types of support.
