More than 15 years ago Tim Reevis pulled up stakes, moved from Montana to Paris and began performing in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.
The action-packed dinner production at Disneyland Paris, chronicling frontier life in the Wild West, features historical figures such as Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and the wise leader Sitting Bull.
Reevis, a member of the Blackfoot Nation in Browning, Mont., retired from performing in 2000 and now he’s a recruiter for the show looking for the next generation of “cowboys and Indians.”
Auditions are set for this weekend in Alberta and Montana starting today on the Blood Reserve and Reevis says it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for individuals who have strong horsemanship skills and a flair for acting.
“It’s the best opportunity for any person to see what Europe is like,” he said. “It definitely opens your eyes.”
Reevis says it took him about a year to get used to life in France, but he learned to speak enough French to get by and his children speak the romance language fluently.
Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show takes place in an outdoor arena in the Disney Village at Disneyland Paris and delivers an authentic western experience complete with a cavalcade of North American animals — Appaloosas and Pintos for the Indians and quarter-horses for the cowboys. There’s also Canadian buffalo and longhorn cattle from Texas.
The daily production includes a series of dramatic chases and charges, native American rituals, rodeo stunt riding, lasso-throwing, a shooting match and a dramatic stage coach race as the coup de gras.
“We’re basically looking for native Americans and cowboys,” said Reevis, adding riding abilities — bareback and with a saddle — are imperative and performers must be at least 18. “You also need a little bit of acting and be able to present yourself boldly.”
For the auditions, Reevis says those who fit the bill and are interested need only bring their enthusiasm. Horses and necessary equipment will be provided.
Performers who are chosen will be required to relocate to Paris. The company will provide paid accommodation, a salary of 2,100 Euros (about $3,200) per month, 25 days a year of paid vacation and more.
Auditions will be held today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kainai Memorial Agriplex in Stand Off, Saturday from 11-6 at Blackfeet Stampede Park in Browning, Mont., Sunday at the Midnight Stadium Rodeo Grounds in Fort Macleod from 11-6 and Monday from 9-4 at the Harry Dodginghorse Memorial Agriplex, Tsuu-T’ina Nation.
