Thirty pizzas for 92 donated units of blood. Fair trade? Students at Winston Churchill High School think so.
For the second consecutive year, the school has won the Canadian Blood Services’ eighth annual High School Blood Donor Challenge. The students celebrated their win Thursday with a pizza party.
“I think that the students here have a strong commitment to getting involved in community events,” said Cayley Kaing, English teacher and student council adviser. “When we put out a cause, explain to them what the need is, they all just seem to jump to it.”
Any student over the age of 17 was eligible to donate, provided they had at least one piece of picture identification.
Deneige Nadeau, vice-president of the student council, was pleased with the efforts of her peers and the success of the event.
“Our goal this year was to . . . make Churchill a bigger influence in the community,” she said. “The blood drive was a big part of doing that.”
Nadeau feels it’s important to remember there is always someone in need of blood and that, at any time, it could be you or your family member.
Catholic Central High School students made 39 donations while their Lethbridge Collegiate Institute counterparts made 37.
Together, the three schools made 168 donations, which can help save more than 500 lives as each unit collected can help up to three patients.
The students are challenging Lethbridge residents to donate blood with the long weekend upon us, as the need for donations generally increases during the holidays.
