Nurses do wear a multitude of hats these days (Barbara Harbers, May 10, 2008). Kudos to The Herald for creating space to celebrate nursing — especially as National Nursing Week commences.
I’d like to mention another kind of hat worn by nurses; these include fedoras, baseball caps, cowboy hats, turbans, blues style felt hats and other kinds of head coverings for men. According to the Canadian Institute of Health Information, there were 1,032 male nurses in Alberta in 2006 (or four per cent of the total nurse population in the province). Unfortunately, such data do not speak to nursing as a viable and excellent career option for men.
Male and female nurses (registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and registered psychiatric nurses) are indeed teachers, confidantes, caregivers, equipment technicians and problem solvers.
