The Prairie Baseball Academy is getting hot at just the right time.
The Prairie Dawgs completed a four-game weekend sweep of Malaspina College Mariners Monday afternoon at Lloyd Nolan Yard to close out their Canadian Colleges Baseball Conference regular season schedule. Fittingly, it was the team’s first weekend sweep of the year and with the playoff championship tournament just two days away, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Monday’s wins were both 4-3 victories as the Dawgs got solid pitching from throughout the staff and timely hitting from some of their most consistent bats.
In the opener, season hits leader Zach Rhodes hit his franchise-best seventh triple of the campaign in the bottom of the ninth inning, driving in the game-winning run and making a winner of reliever Steve Hogue. Rhodes was 3-for-4 on the day as he continued his torrid streak at the plate. Tyler Aiken also had three hits and scored twice.
Mac Batchelor threw four and two-third effective innings to open, striking out nine while allowing just one run. Mitch Schaafsma followed with three innings of scoreless, two-hit ball, before Kirk Haviland gave up a pair of runs over two-thirds of an inning.
In the second game, Jared Mortensen started and surrendered three runs over four innings before Josh Drews came on to record the pitching win, striking out three over three hitless, scoreless innings.
Aiken again had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Jay Johnson had two hits and scored a run.
The year-end championship tournament begins Thursday at Lloyd Nolan Yard. Dawgs enter the tourney with a 21-8 regular season record, having won their fourth straight league title.
